DANI NOIR

Pronto se va a publicar "Dani Noir"de la escritora Nova Ren Suma, el primer libro juvenil para el mercado USA para el que he hecho la portada. Sólo pude leer tres capítulos (la editora no me pudo enviar más) pero me encantaron, lo cual me animó mucho a trabajarme la portada con ganas.

Soon "Dani Noir" , by writer Nova Ren Suma, will be published. This is the first American young readers book I've made the cover for. I could just read the first three chapters of the book (the editor could not give me more) but I really loved what I read and that helped me to work on the cover really hard.

Este es el primer boceto que envié a la editora. Una chica con mallas rosas en un callejón, la protagonista la mira desde el interior del coche. Me pareció interesante mostrar a la protagonista en el espejo.

This is the first sketch I sent to the editor: a girl with pink polka dot tights walking by an alley while Dani looks at her from inside a car. I thought it could be interesting to show Dani's reflection on the mirror.

Posteriormente añadí la contraportada a la misma imagen.

Afterwards I expanded the canvas and added the back cover.

A la editora le pareció que sería bueno cambiar la perspectiva para poder añadir el título de la novela en la marquesina del cine.

The editor felt it should be nice to change perspective and try to add the title of the book on the cinema's marquee.

Intenté cambiar la perspectiva para hacer la imagen más interesante, forzar la fuga y contrapicar para crear cierta sensación de tensión.

I tried to change a little bit perspective to add some more drama to the cover.

A la editora no le gustó mucho el cambio de perspectiva, así que volvimos a la idea anterior, pero quitando a la gente que rodeaba a la chica y añadiendo a Dani, la protagonista, en el espacio de la contraportada.

The editor did not like much the change of perspective so we got back to the previous sketch, but this time removing the people that surrounded the girl and adding Dani, the main character, on the back cover space.

Y finalmente, tras unas cuantas revisiones, llegamos al arte final. Espero que os guste. ¡Y no olvideis comprar el libro, que está muy bien!    :)

And finally, after some revisions, we got to do the final art. I hope you like it. And don't forget to buy the book, it's really cool!   :)

Como hemos tenido la suerte de tener una bonita vista, pues vamos a compartirla, je, je... Incluso se puede ver la Torre de Hércules, un faro romano que data del siglo II.
We've been lucky and have a great view from home, he, he... We can even see the Hercules' Tower, a Roman lighthouse from 2nd century.

Una imagen más de lo que estoy haciendo últimamente para proyectos personales. Partí de un dibujo a lápiz que luego recompuse en Photoshop, luego dí una base de color y dibujé el fondo en Painter para finalmente rematar la imagen de nuevo en Photoshop.
One more of the images I'm working on lately for personal projects. I started out with a pencil drawing. After scanning I rearranged the elements in Photoshop. I switched to Painter to start colouring and also painted the background. I finally opened the image again in Photoshop to go to completion.

Un poco de proceso de trabajo :

Primero empiezo con una versión a tinta. Uso un lápiz col-erase azul y para entintar un Pentel Brush Pen. El dibujo a lápiz no es muy definido para que al entintar esté a la vez dibujando.
A little talk on work process:

First I draw the image using a blue Col-erase pencil and afterwards a Pentel Brush Pen for inking. Pencil work is not too tight so that when inking I have some drawing work to do.

Después escaneo el dibujo y hago una base de color con Painter. Me gusta mucho este programa porque da una textura especial al color, además de mezclarlo mejor que el Photoshop.
After I finish drawing I scan the image into the computer and make a color sketch using Painter. I love this program because it gives color a nice texture. Color blending is way better than in Photoshop.

El último paso es el más largo y laborioso : paso el dibujo a Photoshop y pongo una capa sobre todas las demás en la que voy eliminando poco a poco la línea y añado efectos de luz... ¡Aún me faltan muchas horas para acabar! :)

Last step is the longest and hardest : I switch to Photoshop and add a layer above the rest on which I slowly eliminate line art and make some light effects... I still have a long way to go on this piece ! :)
